The police are hot on the heels of a cunning gang of burglars who have been wreaking havoc in Wolfratshausen's high society for some time. They mainly steal valuable paintings without leaving any traces behind. This makes the case almost impossible for Hubert and Girwidz to solve. But then Hubert discovers that all the stolen paintings were purchased from the same gallery...

Riedl is buying doughnuts at the Rattlinger bakery when a confused woman with blood on her clothes appears. However, she is unharmed, and the blood is not hers. She is Magdalena Meier, who has escaped from a secure psychiatric ward. When Hubert and Girwidz bring the woman back, they find the clinic in a state of shock: a nurse has been murdered...

Because a witness failed to appear at the police station despite being summoned, Hubert and Girwidz want to search for the man. Too late—he is found dead in the sewage tank, his workplace. Sewage treatment plant manager Ulrike Mettmann assumes it was a tragic accident. But it quickly becomes clear that someone helped him along. When it also turns out that the tap water is contaminated, a state of emergency is declared in Wolfratshausen. For Hubert, however, this warning comes too late. District chief Sabine Kaiser's lease is being terminated. She visits a small house where she discovers the body of a man in the boiler room. When Hubert and Girwidz begin their investigation, the dead man turns out to be the “vacancy manager” for the Hinterholzer real estate agency. Pathologist Dr. Fuchs determines that the man died of a heart attack as a result of a panic attack...

At the Rattlinger bakery, Yazid finds a suicide note in which Mr. Lauber announces his intention to murder his wife and then commit suicide. Hubert and Girwidz are relieved to find the couple alive. Hubert and Girwidz are called to a country hotel to calm down an angry guest. Then a chambermaid screams when she discovers the body of a young woman with a gaping head wound.
