Two years later, he managed to defect and went on to perform as a principal dancer for the Houston Ballet and as a principal artist with the Australian Ballet.
Mao's Last Dancer is a 2009 drama film based on the true story of Li Cunxin, a Chinese ballet dancer who defected to the United States during the Cold War. The film follows his journey from a poor village boy selected for elite ballet training under Mao's regime to an international principal dancer who risked everything for love and freedom.
